The Hat That Changed Everything

The summer before sophomore year, I decided to become someone new. Someone who actually did stuff instead of just watching from behind my iPhone screen.

My cousin's resort pool was the perfect place to reinvent myself. I showed up wearing my dad's old fishing hat — pulled low, mysterious. Transformative, or so I thought.

"You playing padel?" A girl with teal streaks in her hair asked. She was carrying a racket, looking like she owned the place.

"Uh, yeah. Totally." I'd never even heard of padel.

"Good. We need another player. I'm Jade." She didn't wait for an answer.

Three games in, I was sweating through my transformation, but somehow crushing it. Athletic? Check. Interesting? Double check.

Then my phone buzzed in my pocket. MOM: "Everything okay? Haven't heard from you."

I ignored it. New me didn't check in every five seconds.

"There's a bear behind the snack bar!" someone screamed.

Chaos erupted. People scrambled. Jade grabbed my hand. "Come on!"

We ran toward the pool, everyone pushing, shoving. My hat flew off. Gone. Just like that.

The "bear" turned out to be a huge dog in a bear costume. Some influencer's prank.

Jade was doubled over laughing. "Your face!"

"I know, right?" I admitted, breathless. "I totally fell for it."

She looked at me, really looked at me, for the first time. "You're not mysterious at all, are you?"

"Not even a little bit."

"Good." She grinned. "Mysterious people are exhausting."

My iPhone buzzed again. I didn't check it.

"Same time tomorrow?" Jade asked, already walking away.

"Definitely."

Maybe the new me didn't need a hat after all.
