The Hat Signal

Maya's hat wasn't just a hat—it was her social invisibility cloak. Beanied and hooded through freshman year, she'd perfected the art of disappearing into her hoodie's cavernous darkness until her friend Mia started dragging her to parties.

"You're being weird," Mia said, as they stood outside Tyler's house. Music thumped through the walls like a second heartbeat.

"I'm not weird, I'm strategic." Maya adjusted her snap-back, practically a security blanket. "What if someone talks to me?"

"That's literally the point of parties." Mia rolled her eyes, but softer this time. "Just... don't overthink it. Okay?"

Inside, chaos reigned. Maya reached for her phone—her lifeline, her excuse—only to realize her charging cable was still at home. Her iPhone battery at 8%. Panic flared.

That's when she saw him: Liam, the track star who'd transferred in last month. He was wearing some dad hat that had seen better decades, looking equally out of place. Their eyes met across the crowded basement. He raised his cup in solidarity.

"Battery life?" he shouted over the music, somehow closing the distance between them.

"Cable situation is tragic," Maya admitted, surprising herself. "Yours?"

"Dead walking in here." He gestured at his phone. "I came for the snacks anyway. These things are always bs anyway."

"Total bull," Maya agreed, then realized how comfortable she felt saying it. They spent the next hour mocking party stereotypes from the safety of the kitchen island, dissecting who was trying too hard and which couples were definitely doomed by Monday.

When Liam finally asked for her number, Maya actually handed him her phone—no cable, no battery anxiety, just her slightly sweaty palm against his as they typed their digits into each other's contacts.

Her hat stayed on, but something had shifted. The cloak had become a crown instead.
