The Hat She Couldn't Take Off

The corporate retreat was her idea of hell. Elena stood by the **pool**, clutching her wine glass, watching her colleagues splash like children. At thirty-five, she felt ancient among these twenty-something prodigies.

Her metaphorical **hat**—Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives—felt heavier than ever. Lately, she'd catch herself in office bathroom mirrors, wondering when the ambitious girl who'd fought her way up from nothing had been replaced by this **zombie** moving through meetings on autopilot.

"You look like you're plotting murder," said Marcus, sliding onto the lounge chair beside her. The office **fox**—charming, ruthless, currently sleeping his way through the marketing team.

"Just plotting survival," she muttered, forcing a smile.

He laughed, not noticing her hands shaking. Three weeks ago, she'd found the lump. Tomorrow, she'd tell her husband. Tonight, she was supposed to network.

The retreat's dinner featured **spinach** something—overcooked, sad, much like her marriage these past years. Richard meant well. But the man who once held her through nightmares of her abusive father now seemed content in their companionable silence.

Marcus touched her knee. "Want to get out of here?"

She looked at his confident smile, the same one he'd used when stealing her promotion last year. For a moment, she considered it—meaningless revenge, one night of feeling desired before everything changed.

Instead, she set down her wine. "I need to call my husband."

Walking away, she realized the zombie feeling hadn't come from the cancer diagnosis. It had come from years of becoming what others expected. Tomorrow, she'd start treatment. But tonight, she'd take off the hat and remember who she was before everyone told her who she should be.
