The Hat of Hidden Wonders

Lily loved her messy brown hair, even though it tangled in the wind like a bird's nest. Every morning, she searched for her favorite blue hat with the silver star on top—but today, it wasn't on her hook.

"Looking for this?" purred a voice from her dresser.

Lily gasped. Perched on her jewelry box was not a cat, but a tiny sphinx no bigger than her hand, with soft golden wings and wise amber eyes. Her blue hat was balanced on the sphinx's head like a crown.

"I'm Cleo," said the sphinx. "And I need your help."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"Magical creatures always can," Cleo said mysteriously. "But my friend, Finnick the goldfish, is trapped in the pond by the old oak tree. He's forgotten how to swim!"

Lily grabbed her backpack. "Let's go!"

They found Finnick floating upside down, his orange scales dull. Cleo explained that Finnick had stopped using his imagination, and without it, he'd forgotten how to do anything fun.

"I used to dream of flying," Finnick bubbled sadly.

Lily had an idea. She pulled out her iphone from her pocket—not to play games, but to show Finnick pictures of the ocean, of coral reefs and dancing whales. "Look at all the wonderful things in the world!"

Finnick's scales began to sparkle. "I remember now!" He did a joyful flip, splashing water everywhere.

Cleo nodded approvingly. "Imagination is the strongest magic of all."

That night, Lily fell asleep with Cleo curled on her pillow and Finnick swimming happily in a bowl by her bed. Her blue hat sat on her nightstand, ready for tomorrow's adventure.

And sometimes, when the moon was bright, Lily could still see Cleo's golden wings and hear Finnick singing about the sea, reminding her that magic lives wherever you believe.

The end.
