The Hat Incident
Maya's neon yellow bucket hat wasn't just accessories — it was armor. At Carter's pool party, she kept it pulled low, hoping nobody would notice she was the only one not actually swimming. The chlorine smell alone gave her flashbacks to seventh grade PE, when she'd accidentally inhaled half the pool during a diving test.
"Yo Maya, you gonna just chill on the sidelines all day?" Jordan called from the deep end, water dripping from his perfect hair. Maya's stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. She'd been lowkey crushing on him since biology, when he'd let her copy his homework despite her being absolutely hopeless at genetics.
"Maybe later," she mumbled, wishing she could dissolve into the patio furniture. The real reason she wasn't swimming wasn't the water — it was the spinach. She'd had a spinach smoothie for breakfast, and during third period, Lila had pointed out the tiny green fleck stuck between her front teeth. Maya had spent the entire day smiling with her mouth closed, paranoid that somehow, magically, more spinach had appeared.
"Don't be shy!" Carter shouted, splashing water toward her.
That's when it happened. Jordan hauled himself out of the pool, droplets streaming down his chest like something straight from a movie. He walked toward her, and Maya's brain short-circuited. She stood up too fast, and her hat — her precious, security-blanket hat — slid off her head.
Her hair exploded in every direction. Frizz city. And there, visible to everyone, was the spinach situation. Still happening. Still terrible.
Jordan froze. Maya considered faking her own death.
But then he laughed. Not mean laughter. "Dude, your hair's kind of iconic. And you've got a little —" he pointed to his own teeth, "just so you know."
Maya's face burned. "I know, I've known since third period, I'm a disaster."
"Nah," Jordan said, grabbing her hand. "You're just real. Come swim before Carter starts his synchronized diving routine again."
She jumped in, hat forgotten on the deck, spinach and all. The water was freezing, and Jordan was already splashing her, and for the first time all day, Maya wasn't worrying about anything except getting revenge.
