The Hat in the Water

Elena stood at the edge of the community pool at dawn, the water still as glass. She adjusted the felt hat on her head—Sarah's hat, wide-brimmed and ridiculous for swimming, but she'd promised. *Keep it safe,* Sarah had said, three months ago, when she'd packed her bags and left David, left their apartment, left everything except this one hat.

They'd met here, at this pool, during adult swim lessons. Sarah had showed up in this hat, claiming the chlorine wrecked her hair. They'd been the worst swimmers in the class, lungs burning, limbs flailing, laughing so hard they'd swallowed half the pool. By the third lesson, they'd ditched the instructor and sat on the deck drinking warm coffee from the vending machine instead.

That was when they'd become the kind of friends who save each other.

Elena dipped her foot into the water. Cold. The morning air bit at her skin through her swimsuit. She remembered Sarah's last night: the shouting match through thin walls, the crash of breaking glass, Sarah appearing at Elena's door at 3 AM with a split lip and this hat in her hand. *I can't stay with you,* she'd said. *He'll find us both.*

They'd eaten dinner on Elena's balcony that night—salad with spinach that had gone slightly wilted, bread ends, wine from a box. Sarah had twisted the hat in her hands until the brim was misshapen. *You're the best friend I've ever had,* she'd said, and then she'd kissed Elena.

Elena had pulled away. *You're drunk. You're scared.*

*Maybe,* Sarah had said. *But that doesn't make it less true.* She'd pressed the hat into Elena's hands. *Keep this for me? Until—I don't know. Until.*

She'd vanished two days later. No texts, no calls. Just gone.

Now Elena waded into the pool, the water rising up her legs, her waist, her chest. The hat floated on the surface when she let it go—dark against the blue, turning slowly in the morning light. She'd searched. She'd waited. She'd pretended this was just another thing Sarah did, another disappearance, another fresh start.

But the police had found Sarah's car abandoned two weeks ago. The wallet was still inside, untouched. The passenger seat was stained with something dark.

Elena swam to the center of the pool, treading water, watching the hat drift away from her. *Until,* Sarah had said. Until what? Until it was safe? Until she could come back? Until—

Her phone buzzed on the pool deck. An unknown number.

Elena swam to the edge, hoisted herself out dripping and shivering, and reached for the phone. The hat kept spinning on the water, turning slowly, waiting like the rest of her had been waiting for months.

*Hello?*

*Elena.* A voice she'd know anywhere, cracked and thin. *I need you to bring the hat.*
