The Hat Full of Wonders

Tommy found the hat in his grandmother's attic. It was purple and pointy, with silver stars that twinkled like real stars. His grandmother called it her Wandering Hat.

"Put it on at midnight," she whispered with a wink. "And see where magic takes you."

That night, Tommy waited until his clock showed 12:00. He placed the hat on his head and—whoosh! His bedroom melted away.

He stood in a garden where flowers glowed like tiny moons. His goldfish, Sparkle, swam through the air beside him, her orange scales shining.

"Sparkle? You can fly?" Tommy gasped.

"In magic gardens, anything is possible!" Sparkle bubbled happily.

A giant bull stepped from behind a glowing tree. But he wasn't scary at all. He had kind eyes and flowers braided into his horns.

"Welcome, Tommy," said the bull in a deep, gentle voice. "I'm Barnaby. I guard the magic from those who would use it for mean things."

Suddenly, shambling creatures appeared between the trees. They looked like—zombies! But instead of being scary, they were trying to fix broken flower stems and rearrange fallen leaves.

"Those are the Garden Helpers," Barnaby explained. "They look scary, but they're the kindest creatures here. They work all night healing plants."

Tommy watched in wonder. The so-called zombies carefully wrapped bandages of spider silk around injured stems and patted soil back around exposed roots.

"They're not monsters," Tommy said. "They're helpers!"

Barnaby nodded. "Never judge someone by how they look, Tommy. True magic lives in kind hearts."

Sparkle did a happy flip in the air. "That's the lesson of the Wandering Hat!"

As dawn approached, Tommy felt the hat tingle. He hugged Barnaby, waved to the hardworking Garden Helpers, and blew a kiss to Sparkle, who promised to visit his dreams.

Back in his room, Tommy took off the hat. The silver stars dimmed, but Tommy knew the magic wasn't gone. It was inside him now, in every kind word he'd speak and everyone he'd give a chance—no matter how they looked.

He placed the hat on his shelf, already wondering where it would take him tomorrow night.
