The Hat Defense

Maya pulled her snapback lower, brim curved just enough to shadow her eyes without looking fake. The hat was her armor—a gray NY logo that said she could leave whenever she wanted.

Her first real house party. Jake's parents were out of town, obviously. The living room pulsed with bass that vibrated in her chest, the air thick with expensive perfume and sweaty anticipation. Maya stood near the kitchen island, clutching a red solo cup like it was a lifeline. Inside, just water from the tap—boring, safe, exactly what she needed.

"Maya! You came!" Sarah appeared from nowhere, tipsy-happy and wrapped around some junior Maya didn't recognize. "We're doing shots in the bathroom. You in?"

Maya's stomach did that thing where it tried to climb into her throat. "Nah, I'm good."

"Come on, live a little." Sarah's perfectly manicured hand reached for Maya's cup. "Let me see what you're—water? Seriously?"

"I have a competition tomorrow," Maya lied smoothly. Her dance competition wasn't for three weeks.

Sarah rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful. "Whatever. More for us." She stumbled away, déjà vu of every movie where the friend gets corrupted and the protagonist stands alone by the snacks.

Maya's phone buzzed. Mom: Don't forget your vitamin D supplements! Doctors said your levels were low at your physical. Love you!

The text hit different here. Like, did other people's moms randomly remind them about vitamins? Was that normal? She typed back: Got it. Love you too. Then deleted it because that was cringe even for a text message.

The hat felt suddenly heavy. What was she doing here? This wasn't her scene. These weren't really her people. She was the girl who took vitamins and went to bed early and had never been kissed.

"Hey."

Maya jumped. A guy stood there—tall, messy hair, holding his own cup. "I'm Ethan. Sarah's cousin."

"Maya."

"Cool hat."

"Thanks."

Ethan leaned against the counter, surprisingly chill. "You know, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person here not drinking either."

Maya's eyes narrowed behind her brim. "For real?"

"Cross my heart." He held up his cup. "Water from the tap. Boring, safe, exactly what I need."

Something in Maya's chest loosened. "You sound like my mom."

"That's concerning, considering I've never met her." Ethan smiled, and it was actually genuine. "So, what brings the cool hat and vitamin-enforced water drinker to Jake's party of chaos?"

Maya pulled the brim down to hide her smile. "Peer pressure. And I promised Sarah I'd come."

"Same." Ethan tipped his head toward the sliding glass doors. "Wanna bail? There's a taco truck down the street. And I'm pretty sure they have water cups."
