The Hat at the Deep End

Maya adjusted her dad's vintage fedora, pulling the brim low over her eyes. The pool party was already in full swing, bass thumping from someone's portable speaker, chlorine and sunscreen hanging thick in the humid July air. She'd been standing by the snack table for twenty minutes, pretending to be deeply fascinated by a bag of Doritos, while everyone else splashed and laughed in the water. The hat was her armor—her older sister's idea. "Just look mysterious, Maya. Not awkward. Mysterious."

"Nice hat." A voice behind her made her jump.

She turned to see Ryan, the quiet kid from her English class, holding—was that a golden retriever puppy? The dog was wearing tiny sunglasses and a bandana. "This is Buster," Ryan said. "He technically belongs to my cousin but he escaped and found me. I think he wants to swim."

Maya stared. "You brought a dog to a pool party?"

"He brought himself." Ryan shrugged. "I'm just the chauffeur. Also, I'm pretty sure nobody's actually swimming. They're just standing in the shallow end taking selfies."

He was right. Maya glanced at the pool—everyone was clustered in the three-foot section, phones held high, perfectly positioned. Not one person was actually swimming.

"Wanna go to the deep end?" Ryan asked suddenly. "Buster needs to practice his dog paddle."

Before she could overthink it, Maya nodded. They walked to the deep end together, Ryan setting the dog paddle strategy, and Maya—leaving her dad's hat on a lounge chair—dived into the cool blue water. The hat stayed behind, but something else washed over her as she surfaced, gasping and laughing. Ryan gave her a fist bump. Buster swam in excited circles around them. For the first time all summer, Maya wasn't watching from the sidelines. She was in the deep end, and it wasn't scary at all. It was just swimming, just a dog, just a moment where being herself turned out to be enough.
