The Hat and the High Dive
Marcus stood by the **palm** tree, clutching his dad's old Cubs **hat** like a lifeline. The pool party raged around him - music bumping, girls in cute swimsuits, Jake from AP Bio showing off his cannonball off the high dive.
"Yo Marcus, you coming in or what?" Jake called, dripping wet.
"Yeah, uh, maybe later," Marcus mumbled. Truth was, he could barely doggy-paddle. At 16, everyone expected you to know how to swim, but his mom had always been terrified of water after her brother almost drowned. So no lessons. No pool parties. Until now, when his best mate Priya practically dragged him here.
He adjusted his hat, sweating in the humidity. Maya, the girl he'd been lowkey crushing on since September, walked past in a bikini that made his brain short-circuit. She smiled at him.
"Nice hat," she said.
"Thanks," he squeaked. Smooth.
"Wanna play chicken fight?" Jake yelled from the pool. "Marcus can be on Maya's shoulders!"
Everyone stared. Maya laughed. "Come on, it'll be fun!"
Marcus froze. If he got in that water, he'd sink. Literally. But also... Maya was waiting.
He took a breath. What was the worst that could happen?
"Bet," he said, setting his hat on the table.
Walking to the pool's edge, his heart hammered. But Maya's smile gave him courage. He slipped into the shallow end, feet touching bottom. She swam over, grinning.
"You okay? You look like you're gonna puke."
"Never better," he lied.
She climbed onto his shoulders in the shallow end where he could stand. "Ready? Jake and priya are going down!"
Marcus wobbled but found his balance. Something clicked - he wasn't drowning. He was literally carrying the prettiest girl in school on his shoulders. And she was laughing.
"We got this," Maya said, squeezing his shoulders.
And yeah, maybe he'd need actual lessons before he'd ever attempt the deep end. But for now? Marcus was winning.
