The Hairless Truth

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in frizzy curls that refused to cooperate. Senior photos were tomorrow, and her hair had officially declared mutiny.

"You going to Jasmine's party tonight?" her mom called from the hallway.

"Maybe." Maya wasn't feeling it. Her crush, Tyler, would be there, and she'd spent the last three weeks overanalyzing every interaction. Does he like me? Am I reading too much into this? The questions circled like sharks.

That's when she heard it—a weird muffled sound from the garage. Maya peeked outside and found a creature perched on a stack of old boxes. It looked like a cat, but wrong. Completely hairless, with wrinkly skin and enormous ears.

"What ARE you?" she whispered.

The cat stared back with ancient, knowing eyes. Like a sphinx guarding secrets. It blinked slowly.

Maya's phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up about the party. *Wear that cute top!* *Tyler asked if you're coming!* *Don't be lame*

Pressure tightened her chest. Suddenly, this naked cat with its zero body issues seemed like the only real thing in her life.

"You know what?" Maya told it. "You're bold. You're just OUT here. No hair, don't care."

The cat—she was definitely calling it Sphinx now—bumped her head against Maya's hand. Warm, purring, unbothered.

Something clicked. Maya had been spending hours trying to fix her hair, convinced it needed to be perfect to be worthy. Meanwhile, Sphinx was strutting around hairless like she owned the world.

That night, Maya showed up to Jasmine's with her hair in a messy bun. No products. No straightening. Just her natural texture, wild and free. Tyler did notice her—he grinned and said she looked cool.

But the real win was walking home, feeling lighter. Sphinx was waiting in the garage, and Maya scratched her wrinkly head.

"You're my new emotional support animal," she decided. "Teaching me confidence one hairless day at a time."
