The Hair That Changed Everything
Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking as she stared at her reflection. The bright blue hair dye had seemed like such a good idea at 2 AM after watching too many TikToks, but now? Now she looked like a human highlighter.
"You look... bold?" Jordan said from her bed, clearly trying not to laugh.
"Bold?! I look like I'm heading to a rave in 2003!" Maya groaned, pulling her hat down lower. "I can't go to school like this. Everyone's gonna stare."
The first bell rang.
"Too late now," Jordan said, grabbing her bag. "Good luck, Smurfette."
Maya kept her hat on through first period, through the hallway stares, through Tyler's "Whoa, what happened to your head?" in PE. She was sweating, the hat brim itchy against her forehead, but she refused to take it off. She'd rather pass out than face this.
Then came the mile run.
"Alright everyone, hats off for the activity!" Coach Martinez announced.
Maya's stomach dropped. She could fake sick. She could hide in the bathroom. But then she'd be "that girl who faked sick to avoid the mile" forever.
She took off the hat.
The gasps. The whispers. The someone actually saying "What the—"
Maya started running before she could think about it, pushing past people, her blue hair streaming behind her like a surrender flag. She could hear them talking, laughing, probably filming this for their stories. This was it. This was her social life officially over.
She was halfway through her second lap when someone fell into step beside her.
"Your hair is literally sick."
Maya glanced over. Riley, the quiet junior who sat behind her in English, was running easily, breathing steady.
"What?"
"The blue. It's sick." Riley's own hair was dyed this impossible shade of purple that Maya had never noticed because Riley always wore it up. "I've been wanting to try something crazy but I'm too chicken."
Maya slowed down. "You're not laughing?"
"Dude, everyone's just shocked because you're always so... perfect." Riley shrugged. "This makes you interesting."
They finished the mile together, Riley's purple and Maya's blue catching the sunlight. By lunch, three people had asked where she'd gotten it done. Tyler had actually admitted it was kinda cool.
Maya still kept the hat in her backpack. But she didn't put it back on.
