The Hair Pyramid Scheme
Maya's bathroom mirror reflected a disaster. Her hair, once cascading in perfect waves, now looked like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket. The DIY bleach kit had lied. "Sun-kissed highlights" my butt—more like "fried lobster nightmare."
"MAYA! We're gonna be late!" Her best friend Chloe yelled from downstairs.
Maya stuffed her hair under a beanie and grabbed her backpack. First day of sophomore year and she was already starting with chaos.
At school, the social pyramid loomed as always: seniors at the top, then juniors, then the "cool" sophomores like Brianna and her squad, then everyone else trying not to get eaten. Maya usually hovered somewhere in the middle—invisible but safe.
But disaster struck third period. Her beanie slid off during chemistry lab, revealing the orange-frizzed monstrosity. Brianna's crew erupted in laughter. Someone posted a pic before Maya could escape to the bathroom.
By lunch, Maya was trending. #FriedMaya had somehow spawned.
She hid in the band room, ready to transfer schools. That's when she found it—Mr. Harrison's old coaxial cable collection, piled behind the percussion equipment. On impulse, she twisted the thick black cable around her head like a crown, wrapping the frizz into submission.
Chloe found her there. "What are you doing?"
"Embracing the disaster," Maya said. "This is my new aesthetic. Cable queen."
Chloe stared at her, then burst out laughing. "You're actually kinda iconic."
Something shifted. Maya walked into the cafeteria wearing her cable crown like armor. The laughter changed—people weren't laughing AT her anymore. They were watching, fascinated.
"That's honestly kinda sick," someone whispered.
Brianna approached, skeptical. "What's with the industrial chic?"
Maya lifted her chin. "It's called not giving a— uh, not caring what you think."
The next day, three other girls showed up with creative headpieces made from wires, ribbons, whatever they could find. The pyramid had shifted. Maya hadn't climbed to the top—she'd built her own structure.
"You started a movement," Chloe said, watching their makeshift army of weird, wonderful headgear.
Maya smiled, touching the cable still wrapped around her hair. "Sometimes you gotta burn it all down and wear the ashes as a crown."
