The Hair Pyramid Scheme

Maya's hair had been acting as her personal emotional barometer all summer. Now, poufy and defiant after the humidity, it practically screamed *I'm struggling here*.

"You should try Glossify," Jessica said, flipping perfect beach waves that never seemed to frizz. "My cousin started selling it. Made five hundred bucks last week."

The *pyramid scheme* alarm in Maya's brain didn't go off. It was on vacation, replaced by *maybe I could finally afford concert tickets*.

She bought the starter kit. $249 of hair products she couldn't afford and didn't understand.

The team Zoom calls were weirdly cult-like. "Rise to the top tier," her 'upline' Chelsea kept saying. "Build your empire."

Maya sold exactly three products. Two to her mom, one to her cat-obsessed neighbor who probably used it on the cat.

Then came the End of Summer Pool Party—the social event of the season. Everyone would be there. Including Lucas, who'd been smiling at her in AP Bio.

Maya spent two hours creating what Glossify called 'Effortless Mermaid Waves.' Her arms hurt. She smelled like a chemical factory.

She arrived feeling like a million bucks—until she jumped in the pool.

The waterproof claim? A lie. The expensive Glossify products melted instantly, turning her hair into a stiff, tacky helmet. She looked like she'd been attacked by a sea anemone.

Lucas waved. She tried to sink to the bottom of the pool and live there forever.

But then Jessica's cousin—who'd recruited her— showed up late, in full makeup, terrified of *swimming* because she'd ruin her 'look.'

Maya watched her stand at the edge, missing everything, while her perfect hair became a prison.

Something clicked. She dove underwater, scrubbing out the last of the stiff product. When she came up, hair plastered to her face, Chloe from the swim team yelled, "Finally! Someone who actually knows how to have fun!"

Maya spent the rest of the night doing cannonballs, accidentally splashing Lucas (who laughed), and realizing she'd rather have a $249 lesson in being herself than a fake pyramid empire.

Her hair dried crazy. Lucas called it "cool." And Chloe invited her to join swim club.

The Glossify kit went in the trash. The pyramid scheme collapsed. But Maya? She was just getting started.
