The Hair Pyramid Scheme
Maya's life was basically a pyramid scheme of embarrassment, and she was stuck at the bottom. As a sophomore, she'd somehow volunteered to help with the homecoming assembly—specifically, the human pyramid stunt that the cheerleading squad insisted would "totally be lit." Spoiler alert: it wasn't.
The problem started in first period when Jake, the varsity linebacker who'd been making Maya's life miserable since seventh grade, decided to demonstrate his wrestling moves by "accidentally" knocking her books into the hallway fountain. Classic bull behavior. Maya fished out her soaked history textbook while his friends howled like they'd just witnessed the comedy event of the century.
By lunch, Maya's frizzy curls had rebelled against the humidity and her self-esteem. Her best friend Priya tried to help with emergency hair products in the bathroom, but Maya just looked like a poodle that had survived a natural disaster.
"You're not seriously still doing the pyramid thing, right?" Priya asked while Maya aggressively attacked her hair with a brush. "Jake's gonna be there."
"That's literally why I have to do it," Maya groaned. "If I quit now, he wins. The pyramid represents everything wrong with this school's social hierarchy, and I'm not letting his punk ostrich self keep me from participating."
The assembly was a nightmare. The gym smelled like sweat and desperation, and the pyramid formation was basically a disaster waiting to happen. Maya got positioned near the base, which meant supporting like, three varsity players. Including Jake.
"Yo, watch the hands, nerd," Jake snickered when he climbed up above her. His jersey smelled like Axe body spray and poor life choices.
The entire pyramid wobbled like it was held together by hope and athletic tape. Then Jake decided it would be hilarious to shift his weight, sending three people tumbling. Maya's hair got caught in someone's zipper, someone's shoe hit her shoulder, and suddenly she was on the gym floor watching the whole pyramid collapse like something from a physics demonstration gone wrong.
Everyone was laughing. But not in the mean way—well, mostly not. Jake was on the ground too, looking confused with his hair sticking up in three different directions.
Maya stood up, smoothed her catastrophically messy hair back from her face, and did something unexpected. She extended a hand to Jake. "You okay there, big guy? That fall looked painful."
He stared at her like she'd grown three heads. Then took her hand. "Yeah. Whatever."
"Next time," Maya said loudly enough for everyone to hear, "maybe don't mess up the pyramid. It's literally called structural integrity. Look it up."
Priya appeared with high fives and emergency hair ties. Maya's curls were still frizzy, her dignity was questionable, and Jake was still a jerk. But as they walked out of the gym while the principal announced an investigation into "unsafe pyramid practices," Maya caught Jake glancing at her with something that looked almost like respect.
Small wins.
