The Hair Incident
Maya stared at her reflection, debating whether the neon pink streaks in her hair made her look bold or like a walking highlighter accident. Today was the day she'd finally reach the top of the social pyramid—well, the upper-middle tier, which for a sophomore at Northwood High was basically the same thing.
She grabbed her phone, opening the group chat: "Operation S.P.H.I.N.X. starts at lunch. Remember: Subtle Photo Hack In New X (posure). Be there or be square."
Her best friend Jules had come up with the code name last week while they were spy-watching the popular table from their strategically chosen library window. Their mission? Document the "evidence" that Queen Bee Taylor was secretly dating Marcus from the football team—information that could shift the entire social hierarchy in their favor.
"Cable's out again," her mom yelled from downstairs. Maya's stomach dropped. No internet meant no uploading the potential viral content that could make them legends.
She grabbed her backpack and bolted. At school, Jules was already in position behind the fiction section, phone raised like a weapon.
"They're sitting suspiciously close," Jules whispered. "And Taylor's laughing at his terrible jokes. I repeat: LAUGHING."
Maya's hands shook. Was this really who they wanted to be? The people who built their reputation on exposing others' secrets? Her hair felt suddenly heavier, the pink streaks mocking her.
"What if we're the bad guys?" Maya whispered back.
Jules lowered her phone. "What?"
"I don't want to be someone who spies on people for clout. I don't want to climb some stupid social pyramid if it means stepping on other people."
The bell rang. Taylor and Marcus stood up, holding hands openly, like they hadn't been hiding anything at all.
Jules looked at Maya, then at them, and finally pocketed her phone. "You know what? You're right. Besides, I think my hair looks way better than hers anyway."
Maya laughed, the neon pink suddenly feeling perfect. They might not rule the school, but at least they'd sleep well tonight. And really, wasn't that better than any throne?
