The Hair in the Pool
The party was winding down when Maya found it: a long, dark hair tangled in the pool filter, unmistakably not hers. She was blonde, like everyone else in this cul-de-sac of sameness.
"Enjoying yourself?" Elena asked, sliding onto the lounge chair beside her. They'd been work friends for three years, since Maya's promotion to Regional Director.
"Just tired," Maya said, pocketing the hair. "Company politics."
Elena laughed, but her eyes didn't crinkle the way they used to. "The betting pool has you leaving before Christmas."
The comment landed like a stone. Two months ago, Maya had found her husband's laptop open to encrypted files labeled "Project Freelance." Last week, she'd noticed charges at a hotel downtown during his supposed business trips. Now this hair.
That night, she searched his phone while he slept. The messages were deleted, but the folder remained: photos of prototype designs from her company, sent to a competitor. Tim wasn't just cheating — he was a spy.
The betrayal hollowed her out. She'd trusted him with her career ambitions over late-night wines by this same pool, all while he'd been mining her for intelligence. Elena's comment about the betting pool suddenly made sense; everyone knew something was coming.
Maya sat on the pool deck at dawn, the stranger's hair between her fingers. She could report him. Could ruin them both. Instead, she dropped the hair into the water and watched it sink.
"Morning," Tim said, appearing with coffee. "You're up early."
She took the cup, his fingers brushing hers. "Just thinking about restructuring."
"Work?" He hesitated. "Or us?"
Maya watched the pool's surface reflect the breaking sky. "Both," she said softly. "Both."
