The Hair Heard 'Round the World
Maya's phone buzzed at 2:47 AM, another notification from the group chat that never slept. She felt like a **zombie**, scrolling through posts of people living their best lives while she was just surviving hers. Her **iphone** had become an extension of her hand, a digital umbilical cord connecting her to everyone else's highlight reels.
The next morning, she made an impulsive decision at 7 AM before school. Blue hair. Why blue? Because normal Maya — the one who sat at the bottom of the social **pyramid**, third row back in homeroom — was boring. Blue-haired Maya could be someone else. Someone worth noticing.
The box dye turned her hair more green than blue, but whatever. It was different.
"What did you DO to yourself?" her mom gasped when Maya stumbled into the kitchen, looking like a mermaid who'd been through a spin cycle.
"It's artistic expression," Maya mumbled, grabbing a breakfast bar.
At school, everyone stared. For the first time since seventh grade, Maya was being looked at instead of looked past. Then came the unexpected part: people actually started talking to her. Even Lucas, the cute junior she'd been low-key **spy**ing on via social media for months (his stories were public, so it wasn't weird, okay?), actually said hey to her by her locker.
"Love the hair," he said, and Maya felt something shift in her chest.
But by lunch, sitting with her actual friends — the ones who'd never cared what color her hair was — she realized something weird. The social pyramid everyone obsessed over wasn't actually real. The popular kids weren't happier. They were just louder.
Her best friend Sam passed her a note: *zombie mode today?*
Maya smiled and wrote back: *always.*
That night, she posted a photo of her green-blue hair with the caption "experimenting." Lucas liked it. But more importantly, she did. The hair wasn't the point. The point was she'd stopped watching everyone else live and started doing something herself.
Her phone buzzed again, but this time she turned it over and went to sleep.
