The Hair Heard 'Round the Pyramid

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, scissors hovering over her waist-length curls. Tonight was the first pool party of sophomore year, and she was still stuck at the bottom of the social pyramid, eating lunch with the debate kids while her ex-best-friend Brianna reigned supreme at the popular table.

"Whatever," she muttered, and snip. The first lock fell. Then another. By the time she stepped back, her hair was a jagged, chin-length mess that screamed "I'm going through something" louder than her Spotify sad-girl playlist.

Her mom's voice floated up the stairs. "Maya! Brianna's here to pick you up!"

Panic surged. Brianna. The girl who'd ghosted her over summer when she made varsity cheer. Maya grabbed a beanie and sprinted out the back door, her bare feet slapping against the pavement. Running away from problems was literally her cardio at this point.

She wound up at the community pool, which was technically closed but whatever. The moonlight danced across the water, shimmering like that aesthetic Pinterest board she'd been curating instead of studying for bio. She dipped her toes in. Cool. Refreshing. A terrible idea that felt absolutely perfect.

"Nice haircut," a voice called from the darkness.

Maya jumped, nearly toppling in. A figure emerged from the pool house—Ethan, that stoner junior who sat behind her in history and drew pyramids all over his notes. He was shirtless, dripping wet, holding a container of blue hair dye.

"I mean it," he said, gesturing at her disaster of a cut. "Looks like you finally broke free from whatever was holding you back. Also, my sister does hair. She's inside, wasted on rosé, but she could fix that mess."

Maya hesitated. Then: "Does she know how to dye it blue?"

Ethan grinned. "Oh, we're absolutely doing blue."

Three hours later, Maya's hair was a patchy but charming blue-gray, Brianna had blown up her phone with seventeen texts (she'd showed up to find Maya gone and accidentally told Maya's mom about the social pyramid drama in eighth grade when she'd spread those rumors about Maya's crush), and Maya was sitting poolside with Ethan and his sister, eating stolen pizza from the party she'd skipped.

"So," Ethan said, passing her a slice. "You gonna climb back up that pyramid tomorrow with the blue hair?"

Maya took a bite of pizza. The water rippled behind her, reflecting a sky full of stars she'd never noticed before because she'd been too busy worrying about things that didn't matter.

"Nah," she said. "I think I'll start my own triangle."
