The Hair Dye Incident

hairfriendbull

Maya's hands shook as she held the box of Electric Purple hair dye. Prom was in three days, and she was done playing it safe. Her natural brown hair had never felt like HER — just what her mom wanted, what her teachers expected. What she wanted was to walk into that gym and have people actually SEE her.

"You're actually gonna do it?" Leo asked from where he sprawled on her bedroom floor, flipping through a skateboard magazine. He'd been her best friend since sixth grade, back when they'd bonded over trading Pokémon cards behind the gym.

"Absolutely." Maya read the instructions twice, section by section. "Either I go big or I stay invisible forever."

The process was messier than the TikTok tutorials made it look. Purple stain ended up on her forehead, her neck, even somehow on Leo's favorite hoodie when he insisted on helping with the back sections. But when she finally rinsed it out and dried it...

"Maya, it's —" Leo stopped, eyes wide. "It's actually sick."

She stared at herself in the mirror. Electric PURPLE. Vibrant, impossible, unhairtable purple. For the first time in forever, she grinned at her reflection like she actually recognized the person looking back.

The next day at school, she walked in with her head held high. Purple hair, purple heart, zero regrets. People noticed. People whispered. Maya felt powerful.

Then she found Chloe and Madison by her locker.

"Oh my GOD, Maya!" Madison covered her mouth with manicured fingers. "What did you DO?!"

"It's —"

"It's literally SO cool," Chloe said, but her voice had that tone. The fake one. "I mean, if that's what you're into now. I guess it's bold?"

"Bold?" Maya repeated.

"Yeah, you know, bold." Madison exchanged a look with Chloe. "Not everyone can pull off... that look. But you're really embracing it. I respect that."

Something in Maya's stomach tightened. They were being her friends to her face, but she could feel the laughter waiting for when she walked away. Two years of sitting at their lunch table, letting them copy her homework, listening to them talk about guys she didn't care about — and THIS was how it was gonna be?

"You know what?" Maya heard her own voice getting loud. People were turning to look. "I'm gonna call BULL on that."

Madison blinked. "What?"

"I said BULL. You're not being supportive, you're being fake. If you think my hair looks stupid, SAY IT. But don't stand there with that fake smile waiting to make fun of me the second I walk away. That's not what friends DO."

The hallway went quiet. Madison's face went bright red. Chloe actually looked down at her shoes.

Maya turned around and walked away, purple hair swinging, heart pounding like crazy. She found Leo at his locker, grabbing his history book.

"I think I just accidentally came out to myself as NOT popular anymore," she said.

Leo looked at her purple hair, then at her eyes. "You were never popular, May. You were just popular-adjacent. There's a difference."

"You're the worst sometimes, you know that?"

"I'm ALSO the person who's gonna help you fix that spot you missed behind your ear," Leo said, grinning. "Come on. I've got more dye. We can do my tips."

Maya laughed. "You'd actually do that?"

"Electric Purple tips?" Leo slung his backpack over one shoulder. "Hell yeah. Someone's gotta keep you company in detention."

Her hair was purple, her social status was probably dead, and somehow, she'd never felt more like herself. The real friends would stick around. And the ones who didn't? They were just bull anyway.
