The Hair Disaster Home Run

Jordan stared in the bathroom mirror, horrified by the hair disaster staring back. What was supposed to be a subtle trim had turned into a tragic, lopsided mess. The TikTok tutorial had lied.

"You look... distinct," his little sister remarked unhelpfully.

Great. Today of all days—the biggest baseball game of the season, and Riley would definitely be there in the stands. Riley, with the perfect smile and the effortless cool that made Jordan's stomach do flip-flops.

The family dog Buster chose that moment to go ballistic, barking at something outside. Jordan rushed to stop him before he woke up their sleeping dad, who'd worked the night shift.

But Buster had already burst through the back door, barking furiously at a fox lurking near the fence. The fox's golden eyes gleamed with mischief before vanishing into the woods.

"Buster, NO!" Jordan hissed, chasing after him. In the chaos, Buster's paw caught the TV cable, yanking it completely loose from the wall.

His dad appeared in the hallway, rubbing his eyes. "What's with the cable? I was catching up on the game..."

"I'll fix it, I promise, after the game—"

"We'll talk later," his dad sighed, turning back to his room.

Jordan's heart sank. The cable would cost money to replace, and money was tight. Plus the hair, plus the stress about Riley, plus everything...

At the baseball field, Jordan played terribly. Two strikeouts, a dropped fly ball. Riley watched from the bleachers, looking concerned. Jordan wanted to disappear.

After the game, Jordan sat alone on the bench, dreading going home. Someone sat beside him—Riley.

"Rough game?" Riley asked.

"You could say that." Jordan hesitated, then added, "My dog went crazy this morning, broke our cable, I have to pay for it, and I butchered my own hair this morning trying to fix it before the game. So yeah, kind of a disaster."

Riley laughed—not mean, but genuine. "That's actually kind of awesome."

"Awesome?" Jordan repeated.

"Yeah, I mean, most people try so hard to be perfect. You're just... real." Riley's eyes met Jordan's. "I like that."

The fox from earlier appeared at the edge of the woods, as if in approval. Maybe today wasn't a disaster after all.
