The Hair Catastrophe

Maya stared at her reflection, willing her hair to cooperate. It had other plans—specifically, a destiny as a frizzy pyramid on top of her head.

"You look fine," her little brother chirped from the doorway, holding their cat, Mr. Whiskers. The cat purred, completely unbothered by Maya's existential crisis.

"Easy for you to say," Maya muttered. "You're not trying out for the padel team today."

Padel had taken over Crestwood High this year. If you weren't playing, you were nobody. And Maya, new kid from Oregon, was currently ranking at "invisible."

Their dog, Buster, trotted in and nudged her leg with his wet nose.

"Even Buster thinks I should stay home and cry into my pillow," Maya sighed.

Her phone buzzed. Emma, the only person who'd actually spoken to her since she moved here three weeks ago: *tryouts r gonna be LIT dont stress*

"That's literally the worst advice ever," Maya said to Buster and Mr. Whiskers. "Don't stress. Cool, thanks Emma."

But something about Emma's ridiculously chill vibe made Maya grab her racquet anyway.

The courts were packed. A literal pyramid of social tiers stood before her—varsity players laughing like they owned the place, sophomores trying too hard, and freshmen pretending they weren't terrified. Maya's hair chose that exact moment to rebel against her hair gel, springing into what felt like three times its normal volume.

A girl with perfect braids looked over and giggled. Great. This was it. The moment before she died of social suicide.

"Hey! New girl!" Emma waved from the baseline. "Save me a spot?"

Maya's feet moved before her brain could protest.

"Your hair's kinda iconic actually," Emma said when Maya reached her. "Like, explosion vibes. Very punk rock."

Maya blinked. "That's one way to describe it."

"I'm Emma, by the way. She/her pronouns."

"Maya. Same."

"Cool. Let's crush this."

They didn't crush it. Maya tripped over her own feet, missed every ball, and her hair completed its transformation into a legitimate cloud. But as they walked off the court, Emma threw an arm around her shoulders.

"Tomorrow," Emma said. "We're gonna be so good they'll write songs about us."

Maya's phone buzzed again—a new group chat: *Court Queens + Maya*.

Her hair could do whatever it wanted. She was going to be okay.
