The Hair Catastrophe

Maya stared at her reflection, horrified. The purple hair dye box had promised "vibrant plum," but her hair now looked like a grape had exploded on her head. And not in a good way.

"This is a disaster," she groaned, frantically searching for a solution. Her phone buzzed—texts from the group chat about Jordan's party tonight. Everyone would be there. Including Alex, the cute junior she'd been crushing on since semester started.

Her cat, Boots, chose that moment to jump onto the counter and knock over a glass of water. Right onto Maya's phone.

"Boots! Seriously?" She grabbed her phone, praying it wasn't fried. The screen flickered ominously.

Two disasters in five minutes. Maya's eyes burned. Maybe she could fake sick. Maybe she could transfer schools. Maybe she could become a hermit and live in the woods.

"Maya? Everything okay in there?" Her brother, Leo, knocked on the bathroom door.

"Go away!"

"Mom says dinner's ready. Also, you look like you're about to cry, which is honestly concerning."

She opened the door, revealing her purple nightmare. Leo's eyes widened.

"Whoa. That's... bold?"

"It's terrible, and I can't go to the party like this."

Leo shrugged. "It's just hair, Maya. It'll wash out eventually. Or you could own it. Either way, you've gotta bear it."

"Easy for you to say. You're not the one with grape hair."

"True. But remember when I got that terrible haircut before freshman year? Everyone made fun of me for a week, then got over it. Humans have short attention spans."

Maya studied herself in the mirror. The purple wasn't actually that bad. Just different. Unexpected.

"Your hair texture is actually kinda cool though," Leo added. "Like, my friend Sam would kill for your natural volume."

She smoothed her hair, noticing for the first time how the purple caught the light. Maybe it wasn't a disaster. Maybe it was a plot twist.

"You think Alex will hate it?"

"If Alex judges you for trying something new with your hair, then Alex isn't worth your time," Leo said. "Also, Sam thinks you're cute anyway."

"Sam from math class?"

"Who else? Now come eat. Mom made tacos."

Maya looked at herself one more time. The hair was happening. The phone might be dead. But somehow, none of it felt like the end of the world anymore.

"Coming," she said. "And thanks, Leo."

"Anytime, grape head."

She'd never live that nickname down. But somehow, she was okay with that too.
