The Hair Catastrophe

Maya stared at her reflection, tears threatening to spill. The hair stylist had promised "layers" but delivered a choppy disaster that looked like someone had taken gardening shears to her head. Her mom called it "edgy," but Maya just looked like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket.

"It's just hair, Maya," her best friend Chloe texted. "Besides, everyone's gonna be too busy stressing about the social pyramid at Tyler's pool party to notice."

Right. The pyramid. Because that's what high school felt like—Tyler and his squad at the top, then the jocks, the regular kids, and everyone else fighting for position at the bottom. And now Maya, with her tragic haircut, was about to walk straight into the center of it all.

The party was already in full swing when she arrived. Tyler's massive pool was packed, people cannonballing and shrieking. Maya tried to blend into the crowd, clutching her solo cup like a shield, when she heard someone behind her.

"Yo, who hacked off their hair with a butter knife?"

It was Justin, Tyler's best friend, loud enough for half the party to hear. The water rippled around him as he surfaced, grinning like he'd just said the funniest thing in history. A few people laughed.

Maya's face burned. She considered running—actually running, leaving her flip-flops behind, sprinting all the way home to hide under her covers forever. Instead, she took a breath.

"Your mom, actually. She did it for free," Maya shot back. "Said something about needing practice for cosmetology school."

The laughter stopped. Then Chloe snorted. Then—miraculously—Tyler himself cracked up.

"Bro, you just got roasted by someone with a bowl cut," Tyler said, splashing water at Justin.

Something shifted. The pyramid didn't feel so suffocating anymore. Maya spent the rest of the afternoon cannonballing into the pool with her weird hair dripping everywhere, not caring what anyone thought. She even let Chloe post the most unflammable photo of her mid-cannonball, captioned: "living my best chaotic life."

By Monday, three other girls had purposely choppy haircuts. Maya's disaster was officially a trend. Sometimes the best way to climb the pyramid was to knock the whole thing over.
