The Hair Apocalypse

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers combing through frizzy coils that refused to cooperate. Prom was in three days, and her hair had officially declared war on her existence.

"You should straighten it," her best friend Chloe had suggested earlier. "Tyler likes sleek hair."

Maya rolled her eyes at the memory. Tyler, the supposed love of her sophomore year, wasn't worth damaging her hair over. Still, the pressure mounted. Every girl in their group had their prom look locked down—except her.

Her phone buzzed. Chloe: *You coming to the mall?*

Maya groaned. Another shopping trip where she'd watch everyone else find perfect outfits while she struggled with basic decisions. Being fifteen was exhausting.

She trudged downstairs, where her mom's golden retriever, Max, greeted her with the usual full-body wiggle. At least someone appreciated her natural look.

"Maya, can you walk Max? And check on Mrs. Henderson's cat?" her mom called from the kitchen.

Fine. Anything to avoid prom planning conversations.

Max pulled at his leash, nose glued to the ground as they navigated the neighborhood. Mrs. Henderson's cat, a grumpy tabby named Luna, sat on the porch, watching them with judgmental eyes.

"Yeah, yeah, I know you're too cool for walks," Maya told Luna, dropping a treat.

Luna's expression softened. Sort of.

An older woman from down the street approached. "Your hair is gorgeous, sweetheart. So wild and free."

Maya blinked. Compliments from anyone over forty were usually followed by "but maybe you could..." Yet this stranger seemed sincere.

"Thank you," Maya said, surprised.

"My granddaughter tried to straighten hers for prom last year. Spent three hours crying when it damaged everything." The woman shook her head. "She looked beautiful before. Some people need to learn that the hard way."

Maya thought of Chloe's perfect straight hair and Tyler's supposed preferences. Maybe it wasn't about what everyone else wanted.

Max barked, pulling her toward home. Luna actually purred—progress.

That night, Maya FaceTimed Chloe. "I'm wearing my hair natural to prom."

Chloe paused. "Really? But..."

"But nothing. It's my hair, my prom. If Tyler doesn't like it, he can stare at someone else's hair."

Chloe laughed. "Honestly? Yours is the only hair that doesn't look like everyone else's. Maybe you're onto something."

Maya smiled. Being fifteen was still exhausting, but at least her hair—and her decisions—were finally her own.
