The Guardian of Green
Lily discovered the old iPhone buried in her grandmother's attic, wrapped in a cloth that shimmered like moonlight. When she pressed the home button, the screen didn't show apps - it showed the world in colors no one else could see.
Her dog Rusty tumbled into the attic, tail wagging. Through the magical iPhone screen, Lily saw that Rusty wasn't just a regular dog - he glowed with a warm golden light!
"Lily! Where are you?" called her best friend Mateo from downstairs.
When Mateo climbed into the attic, the iPhone revealed his secret: he shimmered with rainbow colors, like he carried pieces of every sunset he'd ever seen.
"Let's go on an adventure," Lily whispered.
The iPhone pulsed in her hand, guiding them through the backyard and past the old oak tree. There, hidden behind a curtain of ivy, was a garden no one had seen in years.
But something moved between the rows of vegetables. Something slow and green, with leaves growing from its hair.
"A zombie!" Mateo gasped, clutching Lily's arm.
But the iPhone showed the truth: the figure glowed with the gentlest green light Lily had ever seen.
The "zombie" - whose name was Fern - shuffled toward them, moving slowly because she was so old, not because she was scary. Her green skin came from tending magical spinach for three hundred years.
"I'm not a zombie," Fern said, her voice like rustling leaves. "I'm the Guardian of the Green. This spinach gives understanding to those who eat it."
Rusty bounded forward and sniffed at the purple-tinged spinach leaves. When he ate one, his eyes widened with wonder.
*"The moon told me she'd bring friends,"* Rusty said.
Lily and Mateo gasped - Rusty could talk!
They each ate a spinach leaf. Suddenly Lily understood why Rusty always barked at thunder (he was trying to scare it away). Mateo knew why his little sister cried at night (she missed their grandmother). And they both understood Fern - she wasn't a monster. She was lonely, guarding a magical garden all by herself.
"We'll be your friends," Lily promised.
Every day after school, they visited Fern. The neighborhood kids stopped calling her "the zombie" and started calling her "Fern the Garden Guardian." The magical iPhone stayed with Lily, always ready to show her who might need a friend.
Sometimes the scariest things are just the loneliest, Lily learned. And friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
