The Green Wire
Marcus sat at his desk, the glow of his iPhone illuminating the dark apartment as he scrolled through emails at 2 AM. The spinach salad he'd made for dinner sat untouched, wilting in its ceramic bowl, much like his marriage over the past six months.
He was supposed to be monitoring server cables for the data center—routine maintenance work. But something had been wrong for weeks. The network traffic patterns didn't make sense. Data was flowing to external servers at odd hours, encrypted in ways his company never used.
His phone buzzed. Unknown number.
"They know you're looking," a distorted voice whispered. "The cable under your desk—it's not what you think."
Marcus's heart hammered against his ribs. He'd suspected his company was involved in something shady, but this? This was different. He thought about Elena, how she'd been working late at her new job, how she'd suddenly started receiving encrypted messages on her own phone. How she'd deflect when he asked about her day.
The spinach in the bowl caught his eye—a vibrant green that seemed almost artificial under the harsh LED lights. Green like the wire he'd traced from the server rack to the small listening device he'd discovered taped beneath his desk.
He'd always prided himself on being observant, detail-oriented. But he'd missed the most important spy in his life. The one who shared his bed.
The phone buzzed again. A photo message: Elena, entering a building he knew all too well—his company's competitor. She wasn't just having an affair. She was the corporate spy they'd sent to infiltrate his life.
Marcus set down his iPhone, the realization settling over him like a heavy blanket. He reached for the wilted spinach, took a bite, and found it bitter—just like the truth.
Outside, the city hummed with a million secrets. Tonight, he'd join them.
