The Green-Tooth Selfie

Maya's phone buzzed on her bathroom counter, the fifth Instagram notification in ten minutes. She ignored it, focused on the mirror. Her hair, usually tamed by two hours of straightening, was already frizzling at the edges despite the humidity spray.

"You look like you're trying too hard," her little brother Zay had announced that morning.

She'd spent fifteen minutes explaining to her mom why she couldn't possibly eat the spinach omelet. "Do you know what green specks in braces do to a social life?"

Now, sliding into her usual cafeteria spot, Maya noticed everyone glancing at their phones. Then at her. Then back at their phones.

"Maya," said her best friend Priya, practically vibrating. "Check your story."

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd posted a bathroom selfie, new hair and fresh outfit, before first period. What if someone had already dragged it? What if—

She unlocked her iPhone. The notification bar was exploding.

Her own face stared back from the screen, but not in the way she'd posted. Someone had screenshotted her story and zoomed in. Not on her hair. Not on her outfit. On a tiny piece of spinach wedged between her front teeth.

The caption read: "POV: when you think you're serving main character energy but you're literally serving salad."

Maya's face burned. She'd ruined everything. The hair, the fit, the vibe—destroyed by organic vegetables.

But then she noticed the comments.

"Actually? She's glowing tho" @queen.bee99

"Wait I love her hair here?? Is this her natural texture?" @curlpower

"The spinach is iconic, she's just being real" @authentic.af

"This makes her seem so much more chill than the perfect pics" @jake.w

Priya was laughing. "Maya, do you realize you just went from 'try-hard' to 'relatable queen' in one period? People are literally asking for your hair routine now that they know it's not, like, professionally flat-ironed every second."

Maya scrolled through her notifications. No one was roasting her. They were... celebrating her messiness?

"Spinach and natural hair," she said slowly. "That's my brand now?"

"That's your REAL," Priya said. "And honestly? It's a way better look."

Maya pulled down the bathroom selfie from her story and posted a new one—same messy curls, same everything—captioned: "spinach stain included, no filter needed."

The likes rolled in. Something loosened in her chest. Maybe perfect wasn't the goal after all.
