The Green Splash of Courage
Tilly the turtle lived in a garden beside the most beautiful place in the world—the Rainbow Pool. Every morning, she watched her friends splash and dive in the crystal-clear water. Fish shimmered like living jewels. Frogs performed spectacular leaps from lily pads. Even the ducks raced across the surface like feathered sailboats.
But Tilly never joined them.
"What if I sink?" she worried, her shell feeling heavy. "What if the water is too deep?"
One afternoon, her friend Finn the frog found her hiding behind a patch of emerald-green leaves. "Tilly! Everyone's swimming! The water's perfect!"
"I can't," Tilly whispered. "I'm too scared."
Finn hopped closer and noticed the leaves Tilly had been munching on—spinach, growing wild along the pool's edge. "Wait. Those leaves—do you know what they are?"
"Spinach," Tilly said. "Grandma says it makes you strong."
Finn's eyes widened. "Not just strong! My grandfather told me about the magic spinach by Rainbow Pool. One bite gives you something special. Not super strength, but super courage."
Tilly looked at the green leaf in her hand. "Really?"
"Really. But you have to believe it works. That's part of the magic."
Tilly took a deep breath and ate another spinach leaf. She closed her eyes and imagined courage filling her shell like sunshine.
"Okay," she said, opening her eyes. "I'm ready."
Finn led her to the water's edge, where ripples sparkled like diamonds. "Just try one paddle. I'll be right here."
Tilly dipped one foot into the cool water. Then the other. Something shifted inside her—not magic, exactly, but something warmer. Bravery, she realized. The spinach had helped, but the real magic had been inside her all along.
She pushed off the bottom.
And she didn't sink. She floated, then paddled, then glided through the water like she was dancing.
"Tilly! You're doing it!" Finn cheered, splashing alongside her.
They swam together until the sun painted the sky orange and pink. As Tilly climbed out, dripping and happy, she patted the spinach leaves.
"Thank you," she whispered. Then she smiled at Finn. "And thank you for believing in me."
That night, Tilly dreamed of swimming through starlit waters, her shell light as a feather. She had learned something wonderful: Sometimes courage comes from unexpected places—even from a simple green leaf—and true friends help you find magic you never knew you had.
