The Green Speck Panic
Maya's life was officially over. And not like, "I failed my math test" over. Like, social suicide level stuff.
The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be her moment — you know, the one where she'd finally talk to Liam, the cute junior who'd been in her bio lab since September. She'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting her eyeliner, even attempted those TikTok wing tips that everyone said were "effortless" (they weren't).
Now she was literally running toward the bathroom, clutching her phone like it was a bomb. Someone had posted a mirror selfie in the group chat, and there it was: a giant, neon-green speck of spinach wedged between her front teeth. From the spinach artichoke dip she'd confidently eaten while trying to look "chill and mature" in front of Liam.
The worst part? She'd spent twenty minutes talking to him. Laughing at his jokes. Smiling. All while looking like she'd been grazing in a vegetable garden.
She locked herself in Tyler's bathroom and stared at her reflection. The spinach was gone now (thanks, aggressive flossing), but the damage was done. Her phone kept buzzing. The group chat was blowing up.
"mayaaaaa I'm so sorry I didn't tell you"
"bro that's iconic"
"liam was lowkey staring tho"
Maya's face burned. This was it. She'd transfer schools. Change her name. Move to a remote island where nobody knew about the spinach incident.
Knock knock.
"Maya? You okay in there?"
Liam's voice.
She considered pretending she'd drowned in the sink. Instead she opened the door, ready to face her humiliation like a warrior.
Liam stood there, wet hair dripping pool water onto his shoulders. He held out a red cup. "I made you a punch. And, uh, I told everyone to delete that photo."
Maya blinked. "You... what?"
"Yeah, it was messed up." He rubbed the back of his neck, actually looking nervous. "Plus, honestly? I thought it was kinda cute that you went for the dip. Most girls are all 'I don't eat' at these things."
Her stomach did that thing. The flip-flop thing.
"So... you're not traumatized?" she asked.
"Nah. But next time you eat spinach?" He grinned. "Maybe check a mirror. Or just... own it, honestly. Confidence is key."
Maya took the cup. The punch was too sweet and definitely came from a bucket, but in that moment, it tasted like redemption.
"Next time," she said, matching his smile. "I'll let you check for me."
His ears turned pink. "Deal."
Later, Maya would post her own photo: her and Liam by the pool, both doing ugly laughs with zero spinach in sight. The caption: "When life gives you spinach, make it a vibe."
Her phone blew up with fire emojis.
Sophomore year might be salvageable after all.
