The Green Smoothie Sabotage

Maya's lungs burned like she'd inhaled a campfire, but she kept pushing. The varsity cutoff time was 22:30, and she was running on fumes and desperation. Her coach's voice echoed in her head: "You've got the heart, Maya, but you need fuel."

She'd tried everything. Protein shakes (gross), energy gels (basically toothpaste), and now—courtesy of her wellness-obsessed older sister—the "Green Goddess Detox" routine. Which explained why Maya was currently standing in the kitchen, staring at a blender full of spinach, banana, and something labeled "Super Vitamin Booster X."

"Just drink it, Maya," Lena said, not looking up from her phone. "It's packed with vitamin B12 and iron. It's literally magic for endurance athletes."

Maya side-eyed her. Lena was a sophomore in college who'd suddenly decided to become a wellness influencer, complete with a YouTube channel called "LenaLivesWell." Her sister had always been annoying, but this was next level.

"If this makes me PR at Sectionals, I'll forgive you for stealing my hoodie freshman year," Maya said, and chugged.

It tasted like a lawn mower had a midlife crisis.

But three days later, Maya shocked everyone by placing 7th at the conference meet—good enough for varsity. Her coach was pumped. Her teammates were confused. And Lena? Lena was live-streaming about "My Little Sister's Incredible Transformation" while Maya sat in the background, dying inside.

The worst part? Maya actually kind of liked the smoothies. She'd started making them herself, experimenting with adding different fruits, sometimes even—she couldn't believe she was admitting this—enjoying the ritual. It gave her something to focus on besides the endless pressure of running, of grades, of her parents asking what she was going to do with her life.

Then came the day Lena's followers started asking for the exact recipe. And Maya realized her sister had no idea what was actually in the smoothies she'd been claiming were "her secret formula."

"You've been live-tweeting about this for weeks," Maya said, arms crossed. "You don't even know what's in it."

Lena shrugged, unbothered. "So? I'm the brand. You're the... technical support."

Maya thought about saying yes. It would be easy. But instead she grabbed the blender and started making herself a smoothie, adding extra spinach just to see if Lena would notice the difference.

"Hey," Lena said, watching her. "That's not my recipe."

"It's mine," Maya said. "And I'm thinking about starting my own channel. Called 'Actually Running, Actually Well.'"

Lena stared at her for a long moment. Then she smiled.

"Okay, but can I be a guest?"

Maya thought about it. "Only if you admit you don't know anything about nutrition."

"Deal."

And that was how Maya became a reluctant wellness influencer, running varsity, drinking gross smoothies, and learning that sometimes the stuff that's supposed to be good for you turns out to be the stuff that's actually good for you.
