The Green Smoothie Incident
Maya's summer plan was simple: reinvent herself before sophomore year. No more being the quiet girl who sat in the back. She got a job at Green Leaf, the trendy organic cafe where all the popular kids hung out, hoping to absorb some of their confidence through osmosis.
"You need to try this smoothie," said Jayden, the senior whose Instagram had like ten thousand followers. He slid a cup toward her. "It's got spinach, kale, and basically every green thing that exists. But it's actually good."
Maya took a sip. It tasted like lawn clippings mixed with disappointment. "It's... interesting," she lied, because that's what you did when you wanted to fit in.
Her coworker Leo rolled his eyes. "Don't listen to him. That stuff is gross." He was wearing a shirt that said 'VITAMIN D-FILES' and had the kind of easy confidence Maya couldn't figure out how to fake.
The next week, Maya's mom announced she was taking supplements. "I got these vitamin gummies from the health store. They're supposed to help with focus."
Maya's little sister Chloe immediately stole the bottle. "Bet you won't eat these with your smoothie tomorrow."
"You're literally a fox," Maya said, using the word she'd heard Jayden use to describe someone cunning. "A chaotic fox."
Chloe shrugged. "I'll give them back if you admit you hate working at the cafe."
Maya paused. She did hate it. She hated the pretentious customers who asked if their smoothie was organic enough. She hated how she felt like she was performing a version of herself that didn't exist.
"Yeah," Maya said. "I really do."
That night, she posted on Instagram: "Spinach smoothies are overrated. I'd rather eat actual food that doesn't taste like sadness. Also, my job is awful."
By morning, Jayden had commented: "Finally someone said it. Those smoothies are nasty."
Leo liked it.
Chloe returned the stolen vitamins, but not before leaving a note: "See? Being honest is better than being cool."
Maya realized her sister was right. She didn't need to reinvent herself by pretending to like things she didn't. She could just be someone who hated spinach smoothies and wasn't afraid to say it.
That was actually pretty cool.
