The Green Smoothie Incident

Marcus stared at the blender like it was a bomb. His mom's new health kick meant spinach smoothies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Literally.

"It's fine, bro," his best friend Jax said, looking at the neon-green sludge. "Just tell everyone you're prepping for track season."

Marcus wasn't on track. He was barely passing algebra. But at Lincoln High, perception was everything.

The plan had seemed solid enough: fake a healthy lifestyle, finally get noticed by Maya—the gorgeous junior who'd been flirting with him in chem lab—and maybe actually become the confident athlete everyone thought he was.

Then his sister's cat, Mr. Whiskers, happened.

The feline terrorist had been plotting against Marcus for weeks. That morning, as Marcus frantically tried to transfer his spinach monstrosity into a travel cup before school, Mr. Whiskers launched himself from the refrigerator like a fuzzy projectile. The smoothie went airborne—everywhere.

Marcus stood there, dripping in green liquid, while his cat licked spinach from his paws like a tiny, furry victor.

"Great," he muttered. "Now I'm literally the salad bar."

He contemplated staying home. Feigning death. Anything to avoid walking into first period looking like the Jolly Green Giant's rejected experiment.

But then his phone buzzed. Maya: hey r u coming to the meet today? heard ur running

Running. The one thing he'd lied about.

He could keep faking it. Or he could show up to school covered in spinach, admit he'd been fronting, and maybe—just maybe—actually start running for real.

Marcus grabbed a towel, pocketed his phone, and headed for the door. Mr. Whiskers watched him go with what looked suspiciously like respect.

Fake it till you make it? Nah. Marcus was done with that. It was time to get messy, get real, and maybe—just maybe—actually run toward something instead of away from everything.
