The Green Smoothie Incident

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The whole sophomore class was there, including Jason, who she'd been lowkey crushing on since homecoming. Her best friend Chloe had spent forty minutes straightening Maya's hair and perfecting her winged eyeliner, but Maya still felt like everyone was secretly judging her.

"Hey Maya!" Jason called, walking over with that stupidly perfect smile. "What's in your cup?"

Maya froze. She'd been trying out this new wellness influencer's routine all week—hence the disgusting **spinach** smoothie she'd impulsively made that morning because TikTok said it would clear her skin. "Oh, it's just... like, a health thing?"

"Can I try?" Jason reached for her cup before she could stop him.

The worst part wasn't even that he immediately grimaced. It was that her **iPhone**, which she'd balanced on the pool edge to take that perfect aesthetic photo of her drink, chose that exact moment to slide into the **water**.

Time moved in horrifying slow motion. Maya's hand lunged for her phone, but her foot caught on something—maybe her own dignity—and she went face-first into the pool. Fully clothed. Hair and makeup and all.

She emerged sputtering to absolute silence. Then someone started laughing. Then everyone was laughing. Including Jason.

But here's the thing—that moment underwater? The muffled sounds of laughter above, the weightless feeling, the way her stupid social anxiety literally washed away? It was kind of peaceful. Maya stood up, soaking wet, spinach smoothie completely forgotten, and started laughing too.

"Well," she said, pushing her sodden hair out of her face. "That's one way to make an entrance."

Later, as she sat on the pool edge watching her phone sit in rice (fingers crossed), Jason sat beside her. "You know," he said, "that was actually kind of legendary."

Maya smiled, realizing her perfect hair and aesthetic photos weren't what made her worth noticing. Sometimes you have to dive in headfirst to figure out what actually matters.
