The Green Smoothie Incident

Maya's first week at Northwood High felt like walking through a minefield blindfolded. Every hallway was a potential social disaster, every cafeteria table a declaration of identity. She'd spent the summer carefully curating her Instagram aesthetic — vintage band tees, indie playlists, just the right amount of effortlessness — but none of that mattered when you were sitting alone with a container of spinach that looked suspiciously like pond water.

"What ARE you eating?" Chloe, the queen bee of sophomore year, paused at Maya's table, her squad of perfectly matched friends in formation behind her. Maya's face burned. This was it. The moment that would define her entire high school existence.

"It's... a smoothie?" Maya managed, though it came out more like a question. Her mom had started this new health kick, something about antioxidants and whatever vitamin deficiency she'd read about on a wellness blog that morning. Now Maya was stuck carrying around bright green sludge that smelled like a lawn mower accident.

Chloe wrinkled her nose. "Looks like radioactive cat barf."

Her friends giggled. One of them, a girl with impossibly shiny hair, whispered something behind her hand. Maya felt like she was under surveillance, like there was a hidden spy camera documenting her humiliation for future blackmail material.

"Actually," a voice cut through their laughter. "Spinach is amazing for your skin. My brother's a personal trainer, he says it's basically nature's multivitamin."

It was Riley, the quiet girl from Maya's English class who sat in the back wearing hoodies and reading books that looked way too advanced for sophomore year. She slid into the seat across from Maya, placing her own lunch tray down with deliberate casualness.

Chloe's smile faltered for a split second before recovering. "Whatever. Enjoy your pond water, Riley."

As they walked away, Riley leaned in. "Sorry about that. Chloe's been weirdly aggressive lately. I think her boyfriend's sliding into other girls' DMs again."

Maya blinked. "Wait, how do you know that?"

Riley's eyes twinkled. "I have my sources. Let's just say I'm very observant. Also, my cat's vet is friends with Chloe's mom's personal assistant. You'd be surprised what people gossip about when they think pets can't understand English."

For the first time all week, Maya laughed. Like, actually laughed, not the nervous fake chuckle she'd been using all week. By the time the bell rang, she and Riley had covered everything from the cafeteria's suspicious meat substitute to their shared hatred of group projects. Maya's untouched smoothie sat between them, harmless and forgotten.

"Hey," Riley said as they gathered their stuff. "You want to come over after school? I found this vintage vinyl store downtown and I need someone's opinion on some records."

Maya smiled, feeling something in her chest loosen that she hadn't even realized was tight. "Yeah. I'd love that."

The spinach smoothie could wait. She had bigger things to worry about — like whether her playlist game was strong enough for vinyl store aesthetics.
