The Green Smoothie Incident
Maya adjusted the neon green visor with "The Blend" spelled out in obnoxious pink letters. Her first real job, and naturally, she had to wear the most embarrassing accessory ever created. At least the paycheck would be worth the dignity sacrifice.
"Order up!" Jay called, sliding a cup across the counter. "Spinach Surprise for the cute guy at table three."
Maya's stomach did that annoying fluttery thing. Jason Chen, varsity basketball player and arguably the most gorgeous human at Northwood High, was waiting for his smoothie. She'd spent all semester trying to get him to notice her actual existence instead of just being Background Character #47 in the hallway.
She grabbed the cup—her signature creation with organic spinach, papaya (her mom's secret ingredient for perfect smoothness), and coconut water—and headed toward his table.
This was it. Her moment.
"Here you go," she said, handing it over with what she hoped was a casual smile. "The Spinach Surprise."
Jason looked up, and Maya's brain short-circuited. His eyes were actually that perfect shade of golden-brown in person. "Thanks. You're new, right?"
"Yeah, started last week." She leaned against the chair, attempting effortless cool. "I came up with this recipe myself."
"That's sick." He took a sip. "Wait, what's in this again?"
"Spinach, papaya—"
"Hold up." He squinted at her. "You've got something..."
Maya's heart stopped. Please don't be what she thought it was.
"Right there." Jason pointed. "In your teeth."
SPINACH.
A literal piece of bright green spinach, visible for the world to see, probably visible from space, embedded in her braces like some kind of vegetable prison.
Her face burned. Every single insecurity about her braces, her awkwardness, her entire existence crashed down in that moment. She turned to flee, dignity completely destroyed, but—
"Yo, wait!" Jason was laughing, but not in a mean way. "That's actually kind of iconic."
Maya froze. "What?"
"You're literally out here repping your own product." He gestured at her visor, then at the smoothie. "Commitment to the brand. I respect it."
He was still grinning, but there was something genuine in his expression. Something that made Maya's face heat up for a completely different reason.
"Yeah," she heard herself say. "Full transparency—that was not planned marketing."
"Even better." He took another sip. "This is actually fire, by the way. The papaya's a vibe."
Maya adjusted her ridiculous visor. Maybe sometimes the most embarrassing moments weren't the end of the world. Maybe they were just... moments.
"Thanks. I'm Maya, by the way."
"Jason. Nice to officially meet you, Spinach Girl."
She didn't even mind the nickname. Much.
