The Green Smoothie Incident

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like a tiny, furious bear was hibernating in her gut. Tonight was the night—Jordan's party. The party everyone would be talking about on Monday. The party where she'd finally talk to Alex, who'd smiled at her in third period every day this semester.

"You've got this," her best friend Kai said, handing her a cup filled with something suspiciously green. "Liquid courage. My brother's recipe."

Maya eyed it warily. "What's in it?"

"Spinach," Kai grinned. "But like, blended with fruit and stuff. It's basically a smoothie. Healthiest thing you'll drink tonight."

Spinach. Because nothing says 'cool party girl' like leafy greens. Maya took a tentative sip. Surprisingly delicious. She took a bigger one.

Two hours later, the situation had evolved. Specifically, Maya had evolved into someone who'd just accidentally told Alex that she loved his jacket—while wearing it herself, having borrowed it when the basement got "chilly." A bold move, even for her.

"You're kind of a fox, Maya," Alex said, genuinely smiling now. "I mean, you just stole my clothes and complimented them at the same time. That's talent."

Was she hallucinating, or was Alex actually—

Then Kai appeared, eyes wide. "Maya. That spinach smoothie? Might have had some... additional ingredients. My brother apparently made 'special' brownies earlier and—"

Oh.

OH.

Suddenly the bear in her stomach made sense. Also the reason everything was suddenly fascinating, especially the way Alex's eyes caught the light like actual, literal honey.

Maya started laughing and couldn't stop. Alex laughed too, and they ended up on the backyard swing set, talking about everything and nothing until 3 AM, while the tiny bear in her stomach settled into something warm and gentle. Something like hope.

Monday morning, Maya walked into third period wearing Alex's jacket. Alex winked at her from across the room.

She still couldn't believe her first kiss had happened on a swing set, reeking of spinach and questionable life choices. But honestly? Best night ever.
