The Green Smoothie Incident

Maya's hands shook as she stood in front of the open fridge at Tyler's house party. She'd been crushing on him since sophomore year, and tonight felt like her chance to finally make a move. But then came the unmistakable sound of retching from the bathroom, followed by someone yelling, "Yo, whose cat just threw up in the sink?"

Maya froze. She'd brought her mom's famous green smoothie—packed with spinach, kale, and whatever else her health-obsessed parents forced on her—thinking it would make her look sophisticated and mature. Now she just wanted to disappear.

"It's the cat!" Tyler's friend Jake announced, stumbling out of the bathroom. "Bro, you need to lock that thing up."

Tyler's actual cat, Barnaby, sat calmly on the counter, looking offended.

Maya's smoothie sat on the counter, looking suspiciously similar to what Jake had found in the sink. Green. Chunky. Absolutely revolting to anyone who didn't know better.

She grabbed her drink and bolted for the backyard, needing fresh air before she died of embarrassment. The patio was empty except for a couple making out by the pool—typical. Maya slipped off her flip-flops and dangled her feet in the water, letting the cool liquid calm her racing heart.

"Hey."

Maya jumped, nearly kicking water onto Tyler. He stood there with two red cups, looking genuinely concerned.

"You okay? You took off pretty fast."

"Fine," she lied, then caught herself. "Actually, no. That smoothie everyone thinks is cat puke? That's my health drink. My parents are basically vegan cult leaders."

Tyler stared at her for a second, then burst out laughing. Not mean laughter—the genuine kind that made his nose scrunch up.

"Wait, that was yours? Jake's been freaking out about 'demonic cat vomit' for twenty minutes." He sat beside her, dipping his own feet in the pool. "My parents are totally normal, but they're obsessed with me being this perfect athlete. I fake injuries just to get a break from practice."

They sat there for an hour, talking about the pressure to be something they weren't, the weird things their families did, and how high school felt like one long performance. Maya's spinach-filled smoothie sat forgotten on the patio table as they discovered that the most real connection of the night started with a misunderstanding and ended with feeling seen.

"Hey," Tyler said as the party started winding down. "Maybe next time, bring a normal drink? Or... I could try that green stuff?"

Maya smiled. "Next time. Absolutely."
