The Green Smoothie Experiment
Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing the frizz out of her hair. Third day of freshman year, and she still hadn't figured out how to make it look effortless like the other girls.
"You trying that new smoothie place?" Chloe asked, sliding into the cafeteria seat beside her. "I heard their special literally makes your skin glow."
Maya's stomach did that weird flip-flop thing. "Maybe? I'm not really a health person."
Lie. Her mom had literally gotten on a vitamin kick, leaving those giant horse pills on the counter every morning like they were magical confidence boosters. Maya had been secretly flushing them down the toilet since September.
"We should go after school," Chloe pressed. "My treat. My cable's out at home anyway, so I have nothing better to do."
That's how Maya found herself at Fresh & Fancy, standing in front of a menu with words like "detox" and "rejuvenate" and prices that made her throat tight. But Chloe was already ordering like she did this every day.
"I'll have the Green Goddess," Chloe said. "Spinach, kale, apple, ginger, coconut water."
Maya panicked. "Same. But extra spinach."
What was she doing? She hated spinach. She hated anything green that wasn't gummy bears.
They sat by the window, watching people pass. Chloe took a sip and made a face. "Okay, that's disgusting."
Maya tried hers. It tasted like someone had mown a lawn and put it in a blender. "Yeah, gross."
But then Chloe started laughing, really laughing, and Maya found herself laughing too until her stomach hurt and people were staring.
"Why did we do this?" Chloe wiped her eyes. "We literally could've gotten boba."
"Peer pressure?" Maya suggested.
"Next time," Chloe said, "we're getting the chocolate one. And I'm telling my mom I tried kale and she can stop asking about my health."
Maya nodded. "Same with the vitamins."
Chloe grinned. "You too? I've been feeding mine to the dog."
Maya felt something shift inside her, lighter and brighter than any green drink could make her. Maybe high school wasn't about perfect hair or expensive smoothies. Maybe it was about finding people who also lied about vitamins and made bad choices with you.
"Tomorrow," Maya said, "let's just get pizza."
"Deal."
