The Green Smoothie Disaster
Maya's hair refused to cooperate that morning—half frizzy from humidity, half flat from her old cheerleading bow. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to fix it before giving up and throwing it into a messy bun. Typical.
"You sure about this?" Chloe asked, eyeing the blender like it might explode.
"It's basically a detox," Maya said, though her stomach disagreed. "Everyone's doing it."
The spinach smoothie looked like something that had crawled out of a pond. But Maya was desperate. After being called "basic" by basically everyone at school for liking pumpkin spice lattes, she'd decided to reinvent herself as someone who cared about wellness and sustainability. Or whatever.
"It tastes like... grass," Chloe said, grimacing.
"It's an acquired taste," Maya lied, then almost gagged.
The real problem was Ethan. Beautiful, gym-obsessed Ethan who'd finally noticed her yesterday in biology. Maya had three days to impress him before the homecoming dance voting closed, and her plan had been foolproof: become the effortless, healthy girl who just *happened to be* interesting.
Then lightning struck. Literally.
The power went out mid-blend, leaving her with a half-liquified catastrophe and a dead phone. She ended up running to school in the rain, spinach smoothie splashing all over her white jeans. By the time she arrived, she looked like she'd lost a fight with a salad bar.
Ethan was waiting by her locker. Typical. Because the universe hated her.
"Hey," he said, then paused. "You have..."
Maya's heart stopped. "What?"
"Spinach. In your teeth."
She wanted to die. Like, actually expire right there.
"But it's kinda cute," he added, smiling. "Like, you're actually trying to be healthy? That's cool. Not gonna lie, I've been wanting to try those smoothies but they look gnarly."
Maya blinked. "You think they look gnarly?"
"Absolutely gnarly. But you're drinking one anyway? That's bold." He shrugged. "I like bold."
Later, Chloe would call it social pyramid inversion day—the day Maya accidentally stopped trying to be basic and started just being weirdly herself. And somehow, that was exactly what worked.
"So," Ethan said, leaning against her locker. "You gonna teach me how to make one of those disasters or what?"
Maya smiled. "Only if you promise not to laugh when I get spinach in my teeth again."
"No promises," he grinned. "But I'll probably still drink it."
