The Green Mile
Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, Instagram camera rolling. "Day 7 of my glow-up journey!" she chirped, holding up a glass filled with something that looked like swamp water. Her friends had been doing these wellness challenges all summer, and FOMO was real. She took a sip of the **spinach** smoothie and almost gagged, but kept the smile frozen. This was fine. Everything was fine.
The real problem was swim team tryouts next week. Maya had barely dipped her toes in a pool since, like, forever. But her crush Jake was on the team, and suddenly she'd signed up like her life depended on it. Now she was stuck in this awkward phase where she could barely make it across the pool without hyperventilating.
Her older brother Marcus found her later that afternoon, sprawled on the couch doom-scrolling through完美的 swimmers on TikTok. "You're overthinking it again," he said, stealing her phone. "Some people are good at **swimming**, some people are good at other stuff. It's not that deep."
Easy for him to say. Marcus was a **running** prodigy who'd gotten a full ride to college last year. He'd never had a panic attack in the middle of PE class because he couldn't keep up with everyone else.
"I'm not trying to be an Olympian," Maya groaned. "I just want to not embarrass myself in front of literally everyone."
Marcus laughed. "You know Jake thinks you're cool regardless, right? He told me so at that party last weekend."
Wait, what?
Her brother smirked. "Also, nobody actually likes those spinach smoothies. You're just torturing yourself for no reason."
The next day at the pool, Maya's arms felt like jelly after two laps. Jake waved from the next lane over, looking effortless and annoyingly perfect. But then he called out, "Hey Maya! Want some tips? I struggled so hard my first year too."
Maybe she didn't need to be perfect. Maybe she could just be Maya—someone who sometimes drank gross smoothies, sometimes swam like a drowning cat, but was figuring it out either way. She motioned Jake over, finally ready to actually try.
The smoothie went in the trash. Some things just weren't worth it.
