The Green Hair Incident

Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, running a hand through her newly dyed emerald hair. It was supposed to be "temporary seafoam green" according to the box, but somehow her dirty blonde strands had transformed into something that looked like radioactive pond scum. Her mom was going to lose it.

"Maya! Breakfast!" her mom called from downstairs. Maya groaned. Her mom had been on a major health kick lately, which meant breakfast would definitely involve something green and probably disgusting.

She trudged downstairs, bracing herself for the comments. When her mom looked up from the stove, she froze. The spatula clattered against the pan.

"What happened to your HAIR?!"

"It's... an expression of my artistic journey?" Maya tried. Her mom's eyebrows practically disappeared into her hairline.

"You look like you went swimming in a toxic waste dump," her little brother Jayden chimed in, not looking up from his phone. Classic.

Her mom sighed dramatically and returned to stirring something on the stove. "Well, since you're clearly going through a phase, at least eat your SPINACH smoothie. It's packed with VITAMIN K for... whatever it is that vitamin K does."

Maya peered into the blender. Sure enough, a sludgy green mixture swirled inside. Of course. Green hair, green smoothie. Her life had become a literal kale smoothie.

"I'm good," Maya said, reaching for the cereal cabinet.

"No way. You're not leaving this table until you drink your greens," her mom insisted, pouring the thick green sludge into a glass. "Your body needs nutrients, especially when you're... experimenting with hair color."

Maya's friends were supposed to be here in ten minutes. They were going to the mall, and she was already self-conscious about looking like a human version of Shrek. Now she had to chug a pond-scum smoothie?

She took a tiny sip. Surprisingly, it wasn't terrible. Like, actually kind of good?

"See? Not so bad," her mom said smugly.

"Actually... yeah," Maya admitted. "Can I have the recipe?"

Her mom's face lit up. "I'll send it to you. Now go fix that hair before your friends get here. There's color-remover under the sink."

Maya grinned. "Nah. I think I'll keep it. Green's my color now."

As she headed back upstairs, Jayden finally looked up from his phone. "You know, it's actually kinda sick. Like, main character energy."

Maya smiled. Maybe her toxic hair wasn't so bad after all. Sometimes the worst decisions turn out to be the best ones.
