The Green Hair Catastrophe

Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing through her hair for the millionth time. It was the same boring brown it had been forever—nothing like the vibrant electric blue on Chloe's TikTok, nothing that said "main character energy."

Her cat, Luna, wound around her ankles, demanding dinner. Maya dumped kibble into the bowl absentmindedly, her mind still fixated on the DIY hair dye tutorial she'd watched seventeen times.

"It's just hair, right?" she whispered to herself, ignoring the fact that she had zero coordination and even less patience.

The dye kit she'd "borrowed" from her sister's room sat on the counter. But somewhere between applying the stuff and checking her phone for Chloe's latest post, everything went sideways. Literally—Luna knocked over a bowl of leftover spinach artichake dip while Maya was mid-application.

"Luna, what the—"

Maya's dog, Buster, chose that exact moment to barge in, barking at absolutely nothing. Between the commotion and trying to wrangle a spinach-covered cat, she lost track of time. Way too much time.

When she finally rinsed out the dye, her reflection made her want to move to another country.

"Oh my god, I look like a walking salad."

Her hair wasn't blue. It was green. Not even good green. Like, questionable cafeteria lunch green.

The next morning at school, Maya kept her hood up, mortified. But then Chloe sat beside her in homeroom.

"Love the hair," Chloe said, actually smiling. "Bold move. Did you—wait, is that spinach I smell?"

Maya's face burned. "Long story involving my cat and a very unfortunate accident."

"Honestly? That's kind of iconic." Chloe pulled out her phone. "Can I get a pic for my finsta? This is the most chaos energy thing I've seen all week."

For the first time, Maya laughed—really laughed. Maybe perfect wasn't the point. Maybe being a disaster with green hair and two pets who had zero respect for her personal space was enough.

Maybe that was the main character energy all along.
