The Green Friend by the Pool

Maya loved summer days at the neighborhood pool. The sun sparkled on the blue water like diamonds, and the air smelled of sunscreen and happiness. But today, something strange caught her eye.

Under the willow tree sat a small figure with bright green skin and messy black hair sticking up every which way. It wasn't a monster at all — just a lonely boy covered in green face paint from yesterday's birthday party. His mom had tried to wash it off, but some stubborn spots remained, making him look like a zombie.

The other children whispered and pointed. Maya saw tears glistening in his eyes.

She remembered what her grandmother said: "Sometimes the scariest things are just the loneliest."

Maya marched over to her bag and pulled out her favorite straw hat with rainbow flowers around the brim. "Here," she said, placing it gently on his head. "This will cover your hair until the paint comes off. And you know what? My brother looked like a zombie last Halloween, and everyone thought he was the coolest!"

The boy's eyes lit up. "Really?"

"Really!" Maya pulled out her iPhone. "Want to take funny pictures? We can make zombie faces together!"

Soon, other kids joined in. They played pool games, ate ice cream sandwiches, and took the silliest photos. By sunset, nobody saw a zombie anymore — just a new friend named Leo.

That night, Maya's mom asked about the photos on her iPhone. Maya smiled. "I made a friend today. Sometimes things that seem scary are just people who need someone to see them differently."

The hat stayed on Leo's head all summer, and the pool became their magical meeting place. Because Maya chose kindness over fear, she discovered that the best adventures start with an open heart.
