The Green Dog Incident

Maya stared at her phone screen, thumb hovering over the keyboard. Tyler had finally replied. hey sorry about earlier! wanna hang after school?

That's when her mom's voice echoed up the stairs. "Maya! Don't forget to walk the dog before your tutoring session!"

Maya groaned. Her mom was on another health kick after watching some documentary about "superfoods." Now everything in their kitchen was green, organic, or fermented. Yesterday she'd come home to find spinach in the smoothie she'd specifically asked NOT to have spinach in, and her mom had insisted it was packed with vitamins that would "change her life."

Walking Buster felt like a chore, but the golden retriever had other ideas. He spotted Tyler's house and suddenly transformed into a chaos machine. The leash ripped from her grip, and Buster bolted toward the open garage door.

"Buster, NO!" Maya screamed, racing after him, her backpack thumping against her spine with every step. This was it—her social life was officially over, all because she couldn't hold onto a leash properly.

Buster had discovered a grocery bag on the ground. Bright green spinach leaves scattered across the concrete like confetti. A bottle of vitamins rolled under the workbench. Buster decided this was his personal salad bar and started happily munching on the expensive organic greens.

Tyler appeared in the garage doorway, still grinning from inside the house. "Your dog has expensive taste."

Maya's face burned. This wasn't how it was supposed to happen—she was supposed to be chill, mysterious, not the girl whose dog broke into someone's garage to eat salad.

But Tyler didn't make fun of her. Instead, he crouched down and started gathering the escaped spinach, shaking his head like this was just another Tuesday. The tension she'd been carrying all day started to melt away.

"My dad's convinced those vitamins will change his life," Tyler said, nodding at the bottle under the workbench. "Meanwhile, your dog's the only one who actually benefited from them."

The air between them shifted, awkwardness giving way to something unexpected. All those worries about being cool enough vanished—turned out all it took was a runaway dog and a spilled grocery bag to break through.

That weekend, she brought Buster by Tyler's place, this time on purpose. Her mom had packed more spinach than any human should reasonably consume, but Maya figured she'd endure another green smoothie if it meant an excuse to hang out longer.

Sometimes the best moments happen when you're not following any script at all.
