The Green Diamond Ball

Lily's garden grew the most ordinary things—or so she thought. Until the Tuesday she found bright green spinach leaves shaped like tiny baseballs.

"Mom! The spinach is playing tricks!" Lily called, but her mom was too busy to look. So Lily did what any curious eight-year-old would do: she tasted one.

CRACK! A burst of sparkles filled her mouth. Suddenly, she could hear the spinach whispering: "Throw us! We'll show you magic!"

Lily gathered the spinach-balls into her basket. They jingled like wind chimes. She ran to the park where her best friend Marcus sat alone, hugging his knees. The neighborhood kids were playing baseball, but Marcus never joined—too afraid he'd miss.

"Marcus!" Lily waved. "Catch!"

He caught the spinach-ball instinctively. His eyes widened. "It's... humming?"

"Try throwing it!" Lily said.

Marcus tossed it gently. WHOOSH! The spinach-ball streaked through the air, leaving a trail of glittering green. It sailed over the fence, across the street, and—splash!—landed in the community pool.

Both kids gasped. The pool began to bubble. Green sparkles danced across the water's surface. Then the impossible happened: the spinach-ball started swimming, creating little waves of emerald light.

"It's swimming!" Marcus laughed. "Like a fish!"

The other kids stopped their baseball game and gathered around the pool, amazed. Even shy Billy, who'd been watching from the swings, came closer.

"I bet I could catch it," Lily said, pulling off her shoes. "Anyone coming?"

"I can't swim," Marcus whispered. "I never learned."

Lily took his hand. "I'll teach you. And the spinach magic will help."

That afternoon, five kids learned to swim, guided by glowing green trails. The spinach-ball became their teacher, its magic making water feel like flying. Marcus discovered he was a natural, graceful and confident.

When they finally fished out the spinach-ball, it was just an ordinary leaf again. But something had changed.

"Tomorrow," Lily told Marcus, "you're playing baseball with us."

"What if I miss?"

"Then you miss. But you'll never know if you don't try."

The next day, Marcus stepped up to home plate. He swung with all his might—and missed. But he laughed. The whole game, Lily and her friends swam through the grass like they were still in that magical pool, diving and spinning.

Sometimes, Lily thought, the best magic isn't in the spinach or the swimming or even the baseball. It's in the trying.
