The Green Between My Teeth
Maya's first high school house party felt like walking into a lion's den—if lions pumped bass-heavy EDM and served warm soda. She clutched her red solo cup like a lifeline, hyper-aware of every breath, every awkward hand placement. Her older cousin TJ had promised she'd be fine. "Just vibe, Maya. Don't try so hard."
She spotted him across the room—Caleb, with that effortless smile that made her stomach do backflips. This was it. Her moment. She started toward him, dodging through clusters of people who seemed to know exactly what they were doing.
"Hey Maya!" Caleb waved her over. His friend group was gathered around the kitchen island. Perfect. This was happening.
"What's up?" she managed, praying her voice sounded normal.
"We're doing this zombie apocalypse scenario," Caleb said, eyes bright. "If you could have any weapon, what would you choose?"
Maya's brain short-circuited. She'd binge-watched The Walking Dead last summer. She was prepared. She started listing her ideal arsenal, feeling confident for the first time all night. Caleb was nodding, smiling. This was going amazing.
Then Leah, Caleb's ex with the perfectly curled hair that defied physics, leaned in. "Um, Maya? You have a little..." She gestured to her own teeth.
The bathroom mirror confirmed her worst nightmare. A massive chunk of spinach from the vegetable tray was wedged between her front two teeth, obvious as a neon sign. She'd been walking around with it all night. Talking. Smiling. Flipping her hair like she owned the place.
She scrubbed it away, hands shaking, feeling like she'd just watched her social life die in real time. When she emerged, Caleb was gone, but TJ found her first.
"You okay?"
Maya shook her head, ready to bail, but then she caught her reflection again. No spinach. Still standing. Still here. TJ was right—she had been trying too hard.
"You know what?" Maya said. "I need to get back out there. Like a bear—just own it."
"Pretty sure you're mixing metaphors, but I'm feeling it."
Maya wasn't some cryptic sphinx with all the answers. She was just a girl who'd had spinach in her teeth and survived. Somehow, that felt like enough.
