The Great Makeover Fail
Maya's plan was supposed to be foolproof. Start sophomore year as a completely new person — someone confident, mysterious, definitely not the girl who still slept with a stuffed penguin. The transformation started with lunch. No more sad PB&J in the corner. She'd be the girl bringing interesting, grown-up food. Hence the spinach salad with artisanal vinaigrette.
'You're eating... leaves?' asked Leo, sliding onto the bench across from her. He had that effortless cool Maya had been studying for weeks — ripped jeans, messy hair that probably took thirty minutes to perfect, a confidence that seemed genetically impossible.
'It's a lifestyle,' Maya said, trying to sound casual while her fork hovered awkwardly over a particularly large leaf. 'Want some?'
Leo's expression shifted. 'Oh damn, that's actually from Zenith? My sister's been trying to get me to eat there for months. She says it'll clear my skin.'
Maya froze. Zenith? The salad was from a discount grocery store. But Leo's sister went there religiously.
'Yeah, totally,' she said, the lie falling out too easily. 'Their kale is supposed to be insane.'
This was supposed to be her year of reinvention. Instead, she was running track for the first time because her mom said it would look good on college applications. Every practice ended with her lungs screaming and dignity thoroughly vaporized. Meanwhile, Leo ran like he was barely trying, all long strides and easy breaths, while Maya's jogging looked more like controlled falling.
'You're getting better,' Leo said after practice, falling into step beside her. 'Seriously. Last week you could barely make a lap without dying.'
'Thanks,' Maya managed, still trying to relearn how to breathe. 'I think my dog has more endurance than me.'
Leo laughed. 'What kind?'
'Goldfish. The emotional support kind.'
He stared at her for a full three seconds before bursting out laughing. 'You're hilarious, Maya. I mean that as a compliment.'
Something in his tone made her pause. 'You think I'm joking?'
'Aren't you?'
Maya considered coming clean. About everything. The spinach from Save-A-Lot. The way she only joined track because she was too scared to say no to her mom. The goldfish that was actually named Sir Bubbles and lived in a questionable bowl on her nightstand, its presence somehow both embarrassing and weirdly comforting.
'Yeah,' she said finally. 'Totally messing with you.'
But Leo's phone buzzed. He glanced at it and his face softened. 'Hey, you want to come over? My sister's at Zenith right now. She probably brought back enough fancy salad for an army.'
Maya considered lying again. Instead, she said, 'Only if you promise not to judge me for seconds.'
'Deal.' He grinned. 'But fair warning — my mom's dog is a nightmare. He's convinced he's a cat. It's weird.'
'Maybe he and my emotional support goldfish would get along.'
'Maya.'
'Yeah?'
'You're definitely not who I thought you were.' He said it like it was a good thing. 'I mean that as a compliment too.'
Maybe reinvention wasn't about becoming someone else. Maybe it was about finally meeting the version of yourself you'd been hiding all along — spinach lies, goldfish neuroses, and all.
