The Goldfish Who Wasn't Really A Zombie
Maya was the best spy in the whole third grade. She had a magnifying glass, a notebook for secret codes, and a detective hat made from construction paper. Every day after school, she went on important spy missions around her neighborhood.
Her most important mission happened on a Tuesday, when she spotted something strange in the pond behind the old oak tree. A little goldfish was floating upside down at the water's edge.
"Oh no!" Maya whispered. She gently scooped up the fish with her cupped hands and carried it home in a jar filled with pond water. "I'll save you, little friend."
But when she got home, something magical happened. The goldfish suddenly flipped right-side up and started swimming around the jar! Maya's eyes went huge. "You were playing dead!" she laughed. "Just like a zombie goldfish!"
The goldfish swished its tail and blew bubbles. To Maya's complete surprise, a tiny bubble popped and made a sound: "Thank you."
Maya nearly dropped the jar. "You can TALK?"
"Only to special spies," said the goldfish, whose name was Finley. "I'm not really a zombie. I was just resting my fins. But you saved me anyway."
"Why were you resting at the edge of the pond?" Maya asked.
"I was watching the monarch butterflies," Finley said sadly. "They're flying south for winter, but I can't fly with them. I'm just a fish."
Maya had the best idea ever. She took Finley back to the pond in her jar, then climbed the oak tree with her spy notebook. "I'll be your eyes!" she called down. "I'll tell you everything the butterflies do!"
All afternoon, Maya sat in the tree describing the beautiful orange and black butterflies dancing in the sky. Finley swam happily, listening to every word.
That night, Maya learned something wonderful: being a spy isn't just about secrets and mysteries. Sometimes the best spies are the ones who notice when someone needs a friend, and who help make wishes come true.
Finley wasn't a zombie at all — just a lonely fish who needed a spy with a big heart. And from that day on, Maya knew that saving someone was the greatest mission of all.
