The Goldfish Who Wasn't Just a Fish

Lily's room was quiet except for the bubbles going *glug, glug* in the fishbowl. She flopped onto her belly and peered at her pet.

"Goldie," she whispered, "are you lonely in there?"

The goldfish swam to the front of the bowl and blinked his googly eyes. Lily giggled.

Every Tuesday, Goldie did something strange. He'd swim in tiny, fast circles until the water swirled like a tornado. Then he'd float near the top and wiggle his fins.

"What ARE you doing?" Lily asked, giggling.

Then one Tuesday, Goldie swam to his plastic castle and nudged a tiny orange stone she'd never noticed before. *CLICK.* A secret drawer popped open in the castle!

Lily gasped. Inside was a folded note, smaller than her pinky fingernail.

She carefully opened it. The message read: *"Dear Lily, I am not just a goldfish. I'm a secret spy for the Kingdom of Under-the-Sea Magic! Your curiosity makes you the perfect friend for our mission tonight."*

Lily's eyes went wide. A spy? Her goldfish?

Goldie swam to the front of the bowl and *actually* winked.

That night, Lily crept downstairs to the kitchen. She packed a snack bag: baby carrots, crackers, and her dad's special invention—spinach leaves wrapped around cream cheese.

"Spinach makes you strong," her dad always said. "It's underwater magic food."

When the clock struck midnight, Goldie's fishbowl began to glow. Soft blue light filled her room. A tiny door appeared in the side of the bowl, just big enough for a finger.

"Are you ready?" Goldie asked in a bubbly voice.

Lily nodded, her heart pounding with excitement.

The next thing she knew, she was shrinking! Smaller and smaller until she was the size of... well, a goldfish!

"Come with me!" Goldie said, swimming out of the bowl. Lily could suddenly breathe underwater! She followed him into the magical ocean kingdom hidden beneath her floorboards.

They had an important mission: find the lost orange pearl that powered the kingdom's protective shield. Without it, crabs would invade the enchanted gardens!

Lily's spinach snack gave her extra strength to push through heavy seaweed. Her new friend Goldie guided her through coral caves and past sparkly jellyfish.

"There!" Goldie pointed. The orange pearl was trapped under a fallen rock.

Lily used all her might to lift it while Goldie wiggled the pearl free. The kingdom's shield glowed bright orange again!

When Lily returned to her room, back to her normal size, Goldie swam happily in his bowl.

"You're the best friend a spy fish could ever have," he bubbled.

Lily smiled, feeling brave and magical. Sometimes the most boring things—or fish—are actually the most wonderful adventures waiting to happen.
